Memphis Brunch! We’re obsessed with it! While our longer guides about where to get brunch in Memphis are under construction, below is a big list of places to eat brunch.
I’m making this list quick and dirty – actually no frills, with almost no comments – but you can click and call to find out about drink specials, hours, etc.Read More
Kristina and I rarely take advantage of Overton Square, which is just minutes walking from where we’ve called home since Teach For America’s summer institute ended. With all the high energy of restaurants with live music, like Lafayette’s, and packed seating areas like Babalu with their infamous waiting times (but it was worth it, right?), Overton Square might not always be what we want after a day of being in rooms with 20 voices talking at once sometimes.Read More
I’ve created this based on older posts here, here, and here, and more I added in March 2017. While those other blog posts give a bit more commentary on the patios and have more pictures, this post you’re reading right now is meant to be more of a big reference list.
I have added *dog friendly if the restaurants allowed leashed dogs on their patios. Some of these patios are big, some are tiny, some are just table or two, some are covered or partially enclosed, and some are not. I can’t control when a restaurant decides to open their patio or not, so call ahead if you have a doubt!Read More
Anyway, it delighted me greatly to learn that Memphis has a noodle bar as well - Robtata Ramen and Yakitori Bar in Overton Square of Midtown Memphis. Nestled in a charming yellow house, Robata is THE place for noodle bowls and really tasty Japanese food, not to mention a killer sake selection! My Friday lunch consisted of ebi gyoza (deep fried shrimp dumplings) and the Shoyu Spinach Ramen Bowl - thin cut noodles, chicken broth, spinach, marinated boiled egg, green onion, BBQ pork, bamboo shoots, and bean sprouts. The food arrived literally three minutes after I had placed my order and it was well presented. I quickly dug in and found myself unable to stop eating.Read More
Overton Square is the cool cousin of Beale Street. It’s the entertainment district where locals go to drink and dine, and there’s plenty to keep you busy all night. If you’re looking for fine dining, make a reservation for Restaurant Iris -- acclaimed chef Kelly English’s upscale creole and French restaurant (the five-course degustation menu offers diners a surprise meal prepared according to the chef’s whim). On a laid-back Friday night, grab a beer and a brisket grilled cheese at Local Gastropub, or order a tapas plate of tacos, guacamole (made fresh at the table), and a TC Iced Tea (sweet tea vodka, mint, and lemon) at Babalu Tacos & Tapas. Robata Ramen & Yakitori Bar offers up authentic Japanese-style ramen and meat and veggie skewers, plus it has a solid selection of sake.Read More
When we last featured Overton Square as our neighborhood spotlight in early 2014, there were a lot of restaurants and shops that had either just opened or were about to open. As of this writing, the Midtown entertainment district is not only thriving, it’s full.
Stores and restaurants have been opening like clockwork since we last featured the Square, so that means there are more reasons than ever to visit! Here’s what’s new since we last checked in.Read More
