Lionel Hollins, nonprofit director team up on new Overton Square restaurant

Lionel Hollins, nonprofit director team up on new Overton Square restaurant

Former Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins is teaming up with the director of a local nonprofit to bring a new restaurant — and novel concept — to Overton Square.

The restaurant will serve "Southern-inspired" fare in the former Schweinehaus space, and the owners plan to donate 2 percent of net food sales* to the Mid-South Food Bank. They estimate the restaurant will earn more than $30,000 for the nonprofit in its first year.

"I’ve been looking for something to do since I’ve been out of coaching, not knowing whether I’m going to get back in or not," Hollins said. "When you have something that, on one hand, makes money but, on the other hand, helps the community, it was a no-brainer."

The restaurant is the brain child of Edward Bogard, director of the Memphis-based shoe charity SoGiv, and will take his last name. The idea sprang from a partnership he forged with the food bank in 2014 to allow sales of a special SoGiv shoe to benefit the nonprofit.

"It was so fulfilling," Bogard said. "I wanted to do something like that on a more consistent basis."

With Loeb mural collaboration, art class is in session at Overton Square

With Loeb mural collaboration, art class is in session at Overton Square

Bob Loeb was flipping through the pages of Memphis magazine when he saw a piece of art he had to have. It wasn't a gallery piece, but a mural created by local elementary school students using recycled plastic bottle caps.

The article led to the latest educational collaboration between Loeb Properties Inc. and Shady Grove Elementary.

Loeb orchestrated a trade in which students would create a bottle cap mural for Overton Square in exchange for an educational field trip in which 75 fifth-graders received an art lesson from The Art Project, lunch from Belly Acres and a guided public art tour.

The serendipitous way in which Shady Grove Elementary found itself partnering with Overton Square is a microcosm of Memphis itself, said school principal Kiersten Schnacke.

"That really and truly is what our world should be about — people coming together," Schnacke said. "Through those connections, our students were able to have an amazing experience."

Like Memphis, Shady Grove is a diverse public school with a mix of races and incomes. Five of the school's buses are dedicated to transporting students from a nearby apartment complex.

Overton Square restaurant, venue expanding

Overton Square restaurant, venue expanding

Lafayette's Music Room is embarking on a significant expansion.

The restaurant and music venue located at 2121 Madison Ave. will gain an additional 1,300 square feet in Overton Square, taking over the space previously occupied by The Attic, according to a Wednesday, Jan. 17 news release from landlord, Loeb Properties Inc.

The expansion, which is set to be completed in February, will allow Lafayette's to move its stage to the spot where the original Lafayette's stage was located. A new green room and an additional 60-80 seats are also part of the project.

A smaller portion of the former The Attic space will be converted into a new concept, Midtown Mercantile, which will be a boutique focused on Midtown products. It will be operated by Lafayette's.

The Attic closed Dec. 31, as owner Alexandra Scharff wished to focus more on her other Overton Square concept, The Ivory Closet, said Ciara Neill, spokeswoman for Loeb Properties.

Lafayette's will remain open while the expansion takes place.
