All The Best Burgers You Have To Eat In Memphis

All The Best Burgers You Have To Eat In Memphis

– Try the Good Night/Good Cause from Hopdoddy. Yes, it’s a chain, but $1 of proceeds for this particular burger (with cheddar, caramelized onions, caffeinated BBQ, jalapeños) are donated back to the Stax Academy.

– The Pub Burger at Local Gastropub (Overton or Main Street) is good for $6.99 (with fries) during lunch and all day on Mondays. Nice.

– Babalu Burger from Babalu is available at their Overton Square and East Memphis locations, and people really love it.

– The Southern Gentleman from Belly Acres in Overton Square comes with greens, bacon, and sweet potato.

Boozy Milk Shakes to Celebrate the End of Summer

Boozy Milk Shakes to Celebrate the End of Summer

"If you have a milkshake and I have a milkshake and my straw reaches across the room, I'll end up drinking your milkshake."

Disgraced New Mexico Senator Albert Fall uttered that line during congressional hearings about the Teapot Dome scandal in 1924 — and to be truthful, he was explaining the concept of oil field drainage. But his analogy was immortalized in Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 film, There Will Be Blood, and the lines have been seared in my brain forever since.

I love milkshakes. Especially alcoholic milkshakes, which, these days, are available in eateries and bars all around Memphis. I've gotten boozy on classic milkshakes at the Arcade Restaurant Downtown, and on 1,000-calorie S'mores- and Nutella-flavored concoctions at newer joints like Railgarten and Hopdoddy Burger Bar in Overton Square. And this Labor Day weekend, I'll be celebrating the unofficial end of summer by using my trusty Waring blender to whip up my own.

Sneak Peek: Overton Square's newest restaurant and bar

Though Hopdoddy Burger Bar is based in Austin, Texas, it's doing its best to make its soon-to-open Overton Square location feel Memphis-y.

The word "local" adorns the restaurant's exterior, and Hopdoddy brand manager Erin Fohn made a point to highlight the numerous menu items that will be unique to the Memphis location — a breakfast burger, a set of gourmet french fries, some milkshakes and multiple mixed drinks.

Sneak Peek at Hopdoddy

Sneak Peek at Hopdoddy

Doors were open in preview of Hopdoddy's Monday (April 2) opening.

On the menu will be two items being launched in Memphis: the Lil' Doddy and the All-Day Breakfast burger. The former is a smaller patty that comes in a single or double, served with American cheese — a classic burger, says Erin Fohn, Hopdoddy's brand manager. The latter features a patty mix of sausage, beef, and ham with a potato "hay" for crunch, topped with a scrambled egg patty.

Another thing to note is Hopdoddy's charitable partner through its Goodnight for a Good Cause program. They have chose Stax Music Academy to be the recipient. One dollar of every Goodnight Burger goes to the foundation.

Hopdoddy offers counter service. Order at the counter, then your meal gets delivered to you. One thing that separates Hopdoddy is that a table must be available before you can order and you get samples in line (!).

Hopdoddy Burger Bar to open at former YoLo spot in April

Hopdoddy Burger Bar opens April 2 at the corner of Cooper and Madison, taking over the former YoLo spot and bringing its popular burgers from Austin to Memphis.

The small Texas chain announced a year ago that it would be coming to town, joining a roster of new burger spots that include Farm Burger, the reopened LBOE, Farm and Fries, a couple of new Sear Shacks and others to come.

Hopdoddy serves high-quality beef ground daily, chicken and sushi grade tuna "burgers", makes its own buns and also serves french fries, salads, milkshakes and local craft beers such as Wiseacre and Ghost River. There will be a full bar.

Look for the classics like the Buffalo Bill, made from bison, and new items such as the Lil' Doddy, a single or double burger; the breakfast burger available all day long; and shareable orders of gourmet fries. New milkshakes include s'more, bananas Foster, Oreo cookies and cream and more.

Also look for the roll out new cocktails like a three-whiskey L.I.T. and the Pamplejousse, all made with craft spirits, house-blended liquors and freshly squeezed juices.
