MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - This Wednesday, Babalu's Overton Square location will take part in the Babalu Taco Shop program, which aims to raise money for a child with a life-altering or life-threatening condition.
This year's recipient is Asher Honshell, a 6-year-old boy from Bartlett who was born with Down Syndrome and is currently in remission. Asher's father, Jacob, was diagnosed with cancer last year and is now in remission as well.
Asher, who is a kindergartener at Bartlett Elementary, created a unique taco that features a flour tortilla filled with ground beef, sliced avocado, pico de gallo, and melted Monterey jack cheese.
Babalu Area Manager Jesse Robertson says when the recipient comes into Babalu, they take them into the kitchen with the executive chef and talk about what kind of foods they like.
"Basically, Babalu becomes Asher's Taco Shop for a day. Any taco, not just Asher's taco, but any taco sold that day, $1 will be donated to the family," says Robertson.
Babalu will be open Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Asher's tacos will be available all day long.
