Overton Square Celebrates with Anniversary Party

In November 1969, Memphis voters passed a special referendum legalizing “liquor by the glass.” Seven months later, on May 21, 1970, TGI Friday’s opened on Madison near Cooper in Midtown, marking the launch of what would become Overton Square’s entertainment center, and a halcyon era of Bluff City nightlife.

“It was a wonderful season for the baby boomers,” said Larry Raspberry, the Gentrys and Highsteppers singer. “Overton Square was the next place to go after the teen club boom. We’d discovered the teen clubs in the ’60s, and then they voted in liquor and the clubs opened, and all those same kids had grown up and were going to the Square.
